Everything About Conversations Program for Art Basel 2018 – Conversations, Art Basel’s renowned talks series, will once again bring together leading artists, gallerists, collectors, art historians, curators, museum directors and critics from across the world. Programmed for the fourth year by Mari Spirito, Founding Director of Protocinema, Conversations provides a platform for dialogues and discussions on current topics, offering diverse perspectives on collecting and exhibiting art and the wider artworld ecosystem.

The 25 talks will feature prominent artworld figures including Cecilia Alemani, Richard Armstrong, Ed Atkins, Philippe Charpentier, Simon Denny, Anita Dube, Liza Essers, RoseLee Goldberg, Katharina Grosse, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Isabel Lewis, Kamel Mennour, Elvira Dyangani Ose, Michael Rakowitz, Ralph Rugoff, Thomas Schütte, Uli Sigg, Sarah Sze, Hannah Weinberger and Haegue Yang among many others. Art Basel, whose Lead Partner is UBS, takes place at Messe Basel from June 14 to June 17, 2018.

Art Basel’s Conversations series begins on Wednesday, June 13 with the Premiere Artist Talk devoted to Michael Rakowitz and moderated by Chus Martínez, Curator and Head of the Art Institute HGK FHNW. Further artist talks include Ed Atkins in conversation with Jay Pather, Adjunct Curator for Performance, Zeitz MOCAA, RoseLee Goldberg, Founding Director and Curator, Performa, and Kathy Noble, Writer and Curator; Haegue Yang in conversation with Yilmaz Dziewior, Director, Museum Ludwig; Lynn Hershman Leeson in conversation with Sabine Himmelsbach, Director, House of Electronic Arts, moderated by Dr. Maxa Zoller, Curator of Art Basel’s Film Sector; and Nedko Solakov discussing how a reassessment of history can have the potential to shift the trajectory of our futures with Gianni Jetzer, Curator of Art Basel’s Unlimited sector, and Curator-at Large, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Initiated and moderated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director, Serpentine Galleries, this year’s ‘Artists’ Influencers’ talk will see Katharina Grosse in dialogue with Sarah Sze.

‘The Artist and the Gallerist’ series will be continued with Mohamed Bourouissa and gallerist Kamel Mennour, talking about their relationship and how they work together, moderated by Alexie GlassKantor, Executive Director of Artspace.

On Thursday, June 14, artist Simon Denny, Robert Norton, Founder and CEO Verisart, Kelani Nichole, Founder TRANSFER, and Director, The Current, and Tim Schneider, Art Business Reporter, artnet News, and Founder, The Gray Market will come together to discuss the potential impact of blockchain technology on art, the art community and the world overall. Two talks will be dedicated to collecting art. Philippe Charpentier, CoOwner and Director, mor charpentier; Monique Burger, Owner, Burger Collection, and Herman Steyn, Executive Chairman, Prescient Group, and Co-Founder, Scheryn Art Collection will talk about their advice on buying art, moderated by Alexander Forbes, Executive Editor, Artsy, while emerging art collector Tom Kümmeke and leading collector of contemporary Chinese art Uli Sigg will share their firsthand experiences on working with artists, gallerists, curators and other collectors in a talk titled ‘Starting a Collection’ moderated by Amy Binding, Editor in Chief, Independent Collectors.

Conversations is held daily from Wednesday, June 13 to Sunday, June 17 in the auditorium of Hall 1.1. The program is free and open to the public. All panel discussions are followed by a Q&A session. From Friday, June 15 to Sunday, June 17 three additional talks will take place on Messeplatz in connection with the Creative Time project ‘Basilea’.
