Today Basel Shows would like to present its readers top selection of museums of art in Switzerland. As you know, Switzerland is home to more than 900 museums and art galleries presenting a wide array of cultural and historical offerings. From the ultra modern Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art to the ancient Maison Tavel, Switzerland’s museums capture the full spectrum of the city’s history and major cultural influences. Free admission is offered the first Sunday of every month at most city sponsored museums and new exhibits are constantly updated throughout the year.

Ariana Museum – Ceramic and Glass Art in Genève

12 centuries of ceramic history, 7 centuries of glass production: the Ariana Museum documents both ceramic and glass production with over 20,000 exhibits from Switzerland, Europe, the Near East and Far East. The museum is located in a park on the banks of Lake Geneva.

Rietberg Museum in Zürich

The Rietberg Museum in Zurich is the only art museum for non-European cultures in Switzerland and boasts an internationally renowned collection of works from Asia, Africa, America and Oceania.

The Paul Klee Center, which opened in 2005, is dedicated to the person, life and work of Paul Klee (1879–1940). It houses the worldwide largest collection of Klee’s works. Paul Klee is regarded as one of the 20th century’s most important artists.

Tinguely Museum

The Tinguely Museum, located directly on the Rhine, was designed by the Ticino architect Mario Botta and houses the largest collection of works by Jean Tinguely (1925-1991), one of the most innovative and important Swiss artists of the 20th century.

Museum of Fine Art in Bern

The Kunstmuseum Basel focuses on the paintings and drawings by Upper-Rhine and Flemish artists from 1400 to 1600 and international art of the 19th to 21st centuries. The museum holds the world’s largest collection of works by the Holbein family. The Renaissance collection includes works by Witz and Cranach the Elder, Grünewald. Highlights of the 19th century are represented by paintings by Böcklin, van Gogh, Gauguin and Cézanne. The 20th century collection focuses on Cubism (Picasso, Braque, Léger), German Expressionism and American art since 1950.

Basel’s museum of art will be subject to renovation as of February 2015 until March 2016. Exhibitions are viewed at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst (museum of contemporary art) during this time.
