Best Stands at Design Miami 2017 – Architectural Digest made a selection of the best stands at Design Miami/ 2017 and Basel Shows blog share it with you!
As the worlds of art and design inch closer and closer toward each other, Design Miami—the function-forward offshoot of Art Basel that happened December 6–10—has evolved from a small satellite fair into a must-see for many collectors.
Here, the latest greats in blue-chip vintage (Paul Evans, Albert Frey, Pierre Chapo) sit with gutsy contemporary stars (Misha Kahn, The Campana Brothers, Lindsey Adelman) and a few totally unexpected surprises (a cheery display of Norwegian crafts; tables made of oatmeal). Unsure how to sift through all the stuff? We’ve narrowed it down to a digestible hit list that will give you the perfect dose of the old, the new, and the just plain cool.
R & Company
The boundary-pushing work of the Haas Brothers (a mammoth rug, some fuzzy footed chairs, a wildly carved door) proved a showstopper, as usual, at R & Company’s booth.
Norwegian Crafts’ Curio booth proves that Scandinavian design isn’t always quiet. In collaboration with Galleri Format Oslo, it’s presenting Insubordinate Creatures, a showcase of bold, colorful work by Norwegian textile artist Ellen Grieg and ceramic artist Elisabeth von Kroghin. In the punchy installation, a setting devised by Sean Griffiths of Modern Architect enhances the perspective-pushing qualities of the works themselves.
The Future Perfect
Founder David Alhadeff continues to push the designers on his roster into new media: Los Angeles–based ceramicist Eric Roinestad has unveiled sculptural new lighting (totemlike floor lamps, chandeliers, and mask-shaped sconces), ceramicist Reinaldo Sanguino unveiled a series of painterly garden stools, and furniture designer Chris Wolston brought his sand-cast aluminum pieces to new heights.
