Art Basel Auction: Madonna and Sean Wedding Photos – Nothing, it seems, can stop Art Basel Miami Beach. It has not been the most pleasant few years for the 14-year-old art fair, which is as famous for its hedonism (well, it is Miami) as it is for the art that is wheeled and dealed during the annual festival, which concluded Sunday. It was capped off by Madonna’s raucous fund-raiser for Malawi, complete with Sean Penn, a reported bid from Leonardo DiCaprio, and an after-party that didn’t kick off until 3 a.m. Despite the immense success of Madge’s event (it took in $7.5 million for her Raising Malawi organization) and the numerous paintings sold and parties before it during the festival, there were concerns that this year’s Art Basel Miami would face a few hiccups.
Last year’s event featured torrential storms that nearly drowned the fair; this year’s natural disaster was the looming threat of the Zika virus. There was another topic weighing heavily on the minds of attendees before Basel. Donald Trump’s election in November sent shivers down the spines of both collectors, who feared the billion-dollar bubbles surrounding the market could burst in an unstable economic climate, and those in art-world academia, who question whether or not this president-elect has the cultural intelligence to preserve it.
